Five ps3 More Controllers That Ended Up Being Replaced

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

Nintendo plans to modify the 3DS controls with a new add-on heavily, therefore, here are five more controllers that ended up being replaced due to market pressure or a hot new game.

The PS Dual Shock 3 replaced the original Six Axis controller. Sony introduced the Dual Shock 3, which combined both technologies in a controller that pretty much everyone liked a hell of a lot better. Somehow we still occasionally find original Six Axis PS3 controller in drawers in the office, and having to play without rumble still makes us sad.

The Jaguar Controller was replaced by the Atari Jaguar Pro, which had numerous flaws; two of them were outsized controller and absurd keypad. The Jaguar Pro Controller actually manages to add buttons. And now the Pro Controller has five more buttons than the already-ludicrous Jaguar controller–X, Y, and Z buttons to go with two shoulder buttons at the top. Six games ended up taking advantage of the keys, including a port of Primal Rage and Missile Command 3D.

The original Xbox Controller was replaced by the Controller S, which was difficult for people with smaller hands to play the game comfortably. The control setup was generally fine–it certainly worked well for Halo–but it was still less than ideal.

Microsoft responded by replacing the “fatty” with the Controller S, which was originally available only in Japan. By 2002, the ControllerS was the default Xbox controller, and “The Fatty” available only as an accessory. But while the mistake was quickly corrected, it was still a hard lesson for Microsoft–ergonomics matter. They were much more careful with the Xbox 360 controller.

The Dual Shock replaced the PS3 controller, which has proven the most durable. Now in its third generation, the only real additions to the Dual Shock 3 PS3 controller being the seldom-used motion controls; the Bluetooth wireless connection, and the USB output. Not bad for a controller that’s going on 14 years old.

Sega Genesis, its six button controller replaced the three button controller. The sleek design and added buttons made it become a favorite for Genesis owners, and one of the few successful add-ons for the console.

The Skyrim PC Mods As DLC on Consoles

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

It is well known that the PC version of Skyrim has a few benefits, which include the command console to unlock extras and also the creation of mods that give Skyrim PC players a new lease of life after playing for many months, or getting stuck on certain quests.

Not all Skyrim PC players take advantage of these extras, although it’s nice to have them there, which is something Xbox 360 and PS3 players do not have the luxury of. Would you like mods on the console version of Skyrim?

We’ve seen a few interesting Skyrim Mods since the games release, and some you may know include modifying the game so you can kill children, texture enhancements, Xbox 360 Kinect innovation and the ability to take all clothes off NPCs. If you have a mod you love using, feel free to share details in the comments and what makes it so great.

While we’re sure that many Skyrim players would rather Bethesda focus on perfecting the game, especially PS3 owners, some console owners would welcome the addition of mods, although how could this be added? One option that could work would be DLC, which means less red tape and content that could be free or charged for to enhance the game. This might not be as fun considering it’s free already on PCs, although we’d gladly pay for a really good texture improvement or some of the other mods we’ve seen.

Issues arise at how these mods were created in the first place, and if they create additional problems with Skyrim once downloaded and installed. The PS3 and Xbox 360 games have more limitations than newer personal computers, especially when you consider the age of console hardware, which could mean certain mods would cause more damage than good.

Skyrim PS3/Xbox 360 owners: Would you prefer mods as DLC or Bethesda to focus on current game issues?

Back in April of this year the gaming community had a glimpse of what could be possible for mods and game consoles, with Todd Howard explaining that content made in the Creation Kit will work on the Xbox 360 console and PS3 versions of Skyrim. While they’ve talked with Sony and Microsoft about this possibility, there hasn’t been an option created right now but the opportunity is there, which could be taken up with DLC in the near future.

Microsoft Sells Over 66 Million Xbox 360 Consoles and 18 Million Kinect Sensors at CES 2012

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

In recently, Microsoft announces that over 66 million Xbox 360 consoles and 18 million Kinect sensors have been sold worldwide.

This year may be Microsoft’s final press conference at the Consumer Electronic Show, but don’t expect the Xbox product line to disappear anytime soon. At CES 2012, CEO Steve Ballmer announced today that the Xbox 360 console has now sold over 66 millions units through the end of December 2011, eclipsing its predecessor by approximately 40 million unit sales. He also asserted that the Xbox 360 was 2011′s best selling console in the world.

In conjunction with the units sold to date, over 40 million user accounts have been created on Xbox Live. No numbers were released on how many such accounts were tied to one unit or what percentage were Gold Memberships.

The Kinect sensor also had a successful 2011. Observers of the gaming industry have seen Microsoft heavily invest in the Kinect over the past year, and it has clearly paid off. Despite the dominance of the Nintendo Wii and the recent introduction of the Sony Move, the Kinect has sold over 18 million Xbox 360 Kinect sensors in little over a year. With the continued push of the motion controller device, including the requirement that all future Xbox 360 apps offer Kinect support, Microsoft is attempting to make the device an essential part of the Xbox 360 (and perhaps the Xbox 720) experience.

Ballmer also confirmed that the Kinect will soon no longer just be limited to the Xbox 360, but will now be officially supported by Windows 7 and Windows 8 on February 1, 2012. Unfortunately, it appears that the Xbox 360 Kinect Sensor will not be supported. Instead, users will need to purchase a Windows-compatible Kinect sensor for $249.99 at www.link4game.com, which will only work with computers running the Kinect for Windows SDK software.

On the bright side, the Kinect for Windows allegedly will permit the camera to accurately see objects as close as 50 centimeters in front of the device, which is a vast improvement over its predecessor and perhaps another argument in support of PC gaming. For those who are not turned off by the price, you can pre-order Kinect for Windows from Amazon by clicking here.

What do you think of these numbers? Should Microsoft continue to focus on the Xbox 360 and Kinect as its primary platforms rather than turning its attention to the Xbox 720?

For the ‘Scene It?’ series of games, a special bundle of 4 wireless controllers has been produced by a third-party company, each with a buzzer pad and selection buttons for answering a question.

The ‘Guitar Hero’ and ‘Rock Band’ games have been one of the runaway successes of Xbox 360, in no small part down to the attempt by the games’ designers to produce a controller that makes the music experience more authentic. The wireless guitar for Xbox 360, including functions such as strumming, whammying and a detachable panel on the neck. The controllers can be customized with stickers.
